REDWOOD GROVE CATHEDRAL

My eyes ride up the monarch's trunk
From vantage here on ground
To view that fills my eyes and heart
With thrills that leap and bound!

To venture fix of needle-count
In density of green,
Luxuriant in opulence
Takes skills I can't convene.

This canopy affords shade
Within which breezes play,
This canvas of magnificence
That blesses me today.

Converges central to my sight
With boughs from nearby trees:
And from them all green patches blend
With corresponding ease!

Ease blessing sight and soothing mind
With beauty of this finding:
A tapestry of verdant hues
God's work, I keep reminding.

For grandeur of this splendid tree
In stretch from Earth to sky
Exemplifies our need to reach
Beyond what meets the eye...

Courage Beyond

When I was about 12 years old, I was fishing in a small boat with my Mother and step-father in the open sea. It was during the war and near our small boat were nets to catch ships coming into our shores.

My step-father looked at me and said, "You can't swim, can you?" I said, "No" with great fear as this man was in the military and no one fooled with him. He was a dominating controller. He picked me up and threw me in to the dark sea. I was terrified, fighting for my life. With great courage beyond my young life, I started to swim. I have found in my 67 years of life this is how it's been for me.

Every hardship I endured like a good soldier, gave me patience, love, endurance. Sufferings of all kinds just made me stronger. I acknowledged the truth of life. When I get an attitude of ungratefulness, I try to change it to gratitude. I make myself endure hardships, because I know I will be a much stronger person. Look at the folks around me watching, they can learn how to keep their courage.

I must admit, I cry almost every day of my life because I have a thorn in my heart from a loss of a loved one. But it is OK to cry, its OK to feel down. Do you know anyone who doesn't feel this way one time or another?

One day I said to someone close to me: "Why me" and this angel said: "Why not you"?

There can be terrible times for us all; that's life, but I try to fix my mind on happy thoughts. When I get up in the morning and I'm cross, I've learned to fix my mind on flowers or the sea that I love. If I ever were to go blind, that's all I'd have anyway, my thoughts, so why not fill it up with beauty of our world or a beautiful person you might know.

Flee from evil thoughts, flee from boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient people. We can love them, but we cannot love every person on earth. I must be honest to you about myself. I honor my own integrity.

Have the courage to walk through your circumstance what ever it might be. Nothing lasts forever, it only seems that way. We all have something to be distressed about. Rather, look for your life to be revealed in and through those circumstances.

The greatest courage of all, is to acknowledge your worth, the purpose is to love yourself and be kind to your fellow man.

HALLEY'S COMET, 1910

I had heard so much about the comet and my cousins and I speculated how it might look. Mother and I were sailing to Europe and everyone said we would get a very good look on board ship, with no obstructions such as buildings, trees, etc., to mar our view. I was excited about seeing it and looked forward to it.

Finally the evening arrived when it would be in view. The captain invited us to come up to the top deck at a certain late hour. He had a telescope and we were to take turns getting a closer look. Mother said I had to go to bed but she would call me when the time came. When I awoke, it was morning. "Oh Mother", I said, "You said you would call me." Mother said they had gone up on deck but it was too cloudy to see anything so there was no point in calling me. I was disappointed and said, "It won't come again for 75 years and I'll be an old, old lady then." Mother smiled and said, "You will have a much better chance than I."

HALLEY'S COMET, 1986

Well, I guess I won't see it the second time around either - well, perhaps on television. There was no TV in 1910 - nor radio - but there was a wireless on the ship, and the man operating it was called "Sparks." He picked up world news and it was printed in a small newspaper on board. We thought that a miracle.

Christmas Dinner-Dr. William Wu

Dr. Wu at December's Candle Light Dinner

HOW OLD IS "OLD"?

Is "Old" a bad word? What's "Old"? Consider these:

Verdi composed his best opera "Fallstaff" at 80 and "Ave Maria" at 95;
Titian painted "The Battle of Lapanto" at age 98;
Galileo was 72 and ill when he wrote his greatest work "The Two New Sciences;"
Goethe completed "Faust" at 80;
Benjamin Franklin, at 80, wrote "On Marine Observation."

There is no arbitrary age deadline after which a person can no longer enjoy the pleasures of the mind or of extraordinary creativity.
